Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA) , Xeomin (IncobotulinumtoxinA) , and Dysport (AbobotulinumtoxinA) are all popular cosmetic treatments that are used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They work by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, giving the skin a smoother and more youthful appearance. All three are branded forms of the Botulinum toxin

While they are similar in many ways, there are some key differences between the three treatments that are worth considering. They are also used to treat more serious movement disorders such as spasmodic torticollis, aka Cervical dystonia, which cause uncontrolled contraction of the neck muscles.

Botulinum Toxin Explained

Botulinum toxin, is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for transmitting messages from the nerves to the muscles. This prevents the muscles from contracting, resulting in temporary paralysis.

The toxin is typically injected into the affected muscles using a fine needle. Once injected, it takes several days for the toxin to take effect and for the muscles to become paralyzed. The effects typically last for several months before the muscles start to function normally again.

Botulinum toxin is commonly used in cosmetic treatments to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face (eg. frown lines and forehead lines). It is also used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and chronic migraines.

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic treatment that is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face. It works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, giving the skin a smoother and more youthful appearance. The active ingredient in Botox is called botulinum toxin type A, which is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

It is a very common treatment option used in Singapore to get rid of unwanted wrinkles, crows feet, frown lines and forehead lines.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is a cosmetic treatment that is similar to Botox. Like Botox, it is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles. The active ingredient in Xeomin is also botulinum toxin type A, but it is made using a different manufacturing process that results in a more purified form of the protein.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is another cosmetic treatment that is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face. Like Botox and Xeomin, it works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, giving the skin a smoother and more youthful appearance. The active ingredient in Dysport is also botulinum toxin type A, but it is made using a different manufacturing process than either Botox or Xeomin.

Which is better Botox or Xeomin or Dysport?

It is difficult to say which of these treatments is better, as they all have their own unique benefits and drawbacks. In general, Botox is the most widely used and well-known of the three treatments, and it has been extensively studied and tested. However, some people may find that Xeomin or Dysport works better for them, depending on their individual needs and preferences.

Which last longer?

A study done by Rappl and colleagues titled “Onset and duration of effect of incobotulinumtoxinA, onabotulinumtoxinA, and abobotulinumtoxinA in the treatment of glabellar frown lines: a randomized, double-blind study” access the efficacy of all 3 treatment options for wrinkles.

Sex

Median time for duration of treatment effect (days)

IncobotulinumtoxinA OnabotulinumtoxinA AbobotulinumtoxinA
Female 146.12 140.65 139.69
Male 121.14 116.61 115.81

They found that all 3 had almost similar durat

ion of treatment effect, with Xeomin slightly edging out in the analysis. However, as you can see from the table above, it is only by a couple of days.

All three of these treatments are temporary, and the effects typically last for several months before the muscles start to function normally again. In general, Botox is thought to last slightly longer than Xeomin or Dysport, but the exact duration of the effects can vary depending on a number of factors, including the individual’s age, skin type, and the severity of their wrinkles.

Which is safer?

All three of these treatments are considered to be safe when used as directed by a qualified healthcare provider or dermatologist or aesthetic doctor in Singapore. All are approved by the FDA and Health Science Authority of Singapore. However, as with any medical treatment, there is a small risk of side effects or complications. The most common side effects of Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are mild and temporary, and may include redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Rarely, more serious side effects can occur, such as allergic reactions or difficulty breathing.
