FAQ – A Aesthetic Doctor Answers

What is a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a medical doctor that specialises in conditions relating to the skin, hair and nails. They would be able to diagnose and treat such conditions more accurately than general practitioners.

How common are skin conditions like acne and eczema?

Looking for treatments for acne on your face, back or other areas of your skin? Don’t worry you are not alone. According to the National Skin Centre (NSC part of the National Healthcare Group) Acne vulgaris is a very common skin condition in Singapore. Acne, which causes pimples,  affects around 80% of people as we age and it is one of the most common conditions that Singaporeans seek a doctor’s consultation for. There are many treatment options for patients including lasers, prescription medicines or Isotretinoin.

Another common skin condition in Singapore is eczema (Atopic dermatitis, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis, Discoid Eczema, Asteatotic Eczema). Eczema is cause by man confounding factors like skin sensitivity, allergy to environment, irritation cause by chemicals, acids or solvents. Often, suffers from eczema would seek consultations from their general practitioners, who usually offer topical creams like Dermasone to treat them. If the condition does not improve, the GP will refer their patients to a dermatologist.

How much does it cost to see a aesthetic doctor or dermatologist in Singapore?

There are many different aesthetic clinic and dermatologist in Singapore that charges different rates for their treatments. Prices are usually split between consultation and the actual treatment performed by your doctors. Here’s a short summary of our prices:

Initial consultation: $30 – $150

Medication: $100 – $200

Different treatments, laser etc:  $150 – $1500

 Botox and other fillers: $200 – $1500

Can I claim insurance for aesthetic or dermatological treatment?

Health insurance in Singapore usually do not cover cosmetic treatments and skin conditions. Therefore patients should contact their insurance providers before making an appointment.

Certain dermatology treatments are covered for corporate insurance plans. Man medical and surgical treatments should be claimable in your outpatient coverage. Here are some treatments that may be covered:

Skin related: Dermatology related to skin cancers can be claimed. This includes treatments like mole (Melanocytic nevus) removals and diagnosis, skin cancer screenings and treatments.

Acne related: Acne related treatments are usually covered under inpatient and out patient insurance. Medications, laser treatments and  topical cremes would be covered under the plans.

These are only a borad over view of insurance coverage. Companies in Singapore offer a wide range of insurance plans and coverages, therefore you should contact your providers for a more comprehensive understanding of what treatments and skin conditions are covered.

The private versus public dermatologist route in Singapore

Singapore’s public medical is well equipped to diagnose and treat medical dermatology conditions. Public dermatologist are located in the National Healthcare Group’s National Skin Center. To get access to their services, the usual route would be to get a referral from your neighborhood doctor or through the Polyclinics. Once you get a doctor’s referral, you will be asked to book an appointment in 2-3 months time.

As for the private doctor’s route, you’ll just need to call the clinic and you’ll get an appointment with the dermatologist within a few days or few weeks.
